Colorimeter

A customer required a handheld instrument to measure colormetric sensors printed onto food packaging to detect spoilage.

A hand held optical device was developed with an associated probe that was fitted with red, green and blue LEDs allowed detection at various wavelengths. The instrument could either be used as a stand alone or connected to a pc.  The data was stored in the instrument and downloaded at the end of the day if it was used in the stand-alone mode. Different methods could be loaded onto the instrument when it was connected to a pc.  The instrument delivered has an lcd display and control buttons to enable the menu displayed to be scrolled through. The instrument could either be used for single measurements or for continuous scanning.

The instrument enabled the customer to be able to measure numerous samples in a day at different locations and without special light conditions.

Imaging System

Whistonbrook Technologies were involved in a collaborative project to provide a system to take analytical colour images of biological surfaces. The images had to reproduce exactly the colour and intensity of the subject and be comparable from day to day. A system was developed that used a black and white camera and various coloured LEDs to illuminate the subject. The camera was operated in manual mode with no automatic intensity or colour compensation. The single B&W images taken with different LED illumination were then combined in a software package to produce coloured images of reproducible intensity and colour. In this way images could be compared without the problems of changes in the white light illumination.
