Multi-functional Fuel Cell Test SystemA manufacturer of fuels cells requested a number of fuel cell control and test systems to equip their testing laboratory. The systems needed to control the complete system including eight gas valves and flows, the liquid fuel flow, the cell temperature and the current load. The PC package needed to include a manual control screen allowing the changing of all the parameters and an automatic routine using an editable script language to be run. Safety features to detect limits and emergency shutdowns needed to be incorporated in the system. We delivered eight identical systems capable of running tests at 30W. Each system comprised a load controller, a valve relay bank, a liquid pump, flow controllers and a 200W heater controller. Scripts could be written to change either the current load or set potential and other control parameters over a number of steps for up to 20 days. Current interrupt tests could be run at any time with data being loaded into data files for analysis later. Three of the systems were then modified by the addition of a separate current load controller to allow 120W tests to be run.

Fuel Cell Test RigA company carrying out research and development on a new fuel cell required a custom test and control system to allow multiple fuels to be fed into the cell. Sixteen gas valves and five flow controllers allowed the fuel cell to be operated under various test conditions.
A 200W heater with eight temperature and pressure sensors allowed the cell to be accurately monitored. The system was controlled by a PC software package which allowed the cell to be tested manually or by pre-written method scripts.
